DTC designed and rated a new single-span bridge to replace the deteriorating structure carrying Whitney Street over Monoosnoc Brook.  This project is part of the MassDOT Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP) and consists of:

  • Five (5) prestressed concrete NEXT D beams, serving as the superstructure and deck, with 9” wide C.I.P. closure pours provided for continuity
  • Cast-in-place concrete integral abutments and wingwalls form the new substructure
  • New substructure elements positioned behind the original concrete gravity abutments that remained in place in order to provide additional scour protection
  • Supports along exterior beams and abutment openings for gas and water utility pipes
  • Adjacent utility bridge for the permanent relocation of a 2’-0” diameter sewer pipe
  • Soldier pile and lagging retaining wall at northwest corner to protect building from undermining
  • Temporary pedestrian bridge during construction

The bridge was closed to traffic during construction and a short detour was provided throughout this period, but Whitney Street is currently open to traffic and pedestrians.  The current bridge has a 73’-0” span length, two (2) 16’-0” travel lanes, two (2) 6’-6” sidewalks, and is skewed 24.5 degrees.
