DTC was responsible for the bridge replacement as well as roadway modifications to Northampton Street (Route 10) as part of the MassDOT Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP). The most significant change was creating a new signalized intersection at West Street. This intersection was adjusted by widening and providing a “left turn only” lane along Route 10 just north of the bridge.
The bridge was closed during construction and a detour was established via Route 10 and O’Neill Street. Intersection improvements were required to accommodate this detour and, similar to the Route 10 and West Street intersection, this intersection is now signalized and O’Neill Street was widened to provide a “left turn only” lane.
Sidewalks on both sides of Route 10 were replaced within the limits of the project and a temporary pedestrian bridge was provided at the bridge site throughout construction.
The highway design portion of this project included:
- Alignment definition
- Travel way widening
- Full-depth roadway construction
- Adding dedicated left turn lanes
- Providing signalized traffic intersections
- Utility design and coordination
- Drainage improvements
- Temporary pedestrian/utility bridge
- Providing ADA compliant wheelchair ramps
- Driveway connections
- Detour Route
