photo_projects_nhavenhsDTC was selected to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for the new 240,000 s.f. North Haven High School. The MEP design incorporated unique and state-of-the-art equipment for:

  • Technology Labs
  • Science Classrooms/ Laboratories
  • Photography Labs/ Dark Room
  • Art Studios
  • Kiln Room
  • Chemical Storage
  • Music Rooms
  • Auditorium
  • Food Service/ Cafeteria
  • Gymnasium/ Locker Rooms
  • Library/ Media Center
  • The sophisticated HVAC system consisted of energy efficient rooftop systems that include direct digital controls (DDC) and variable volume air handling units with outside air economizers. DTC's electrical engineers provided power distribution; uninterruptible power sources (UPS), emergency power, interior/exterior and emergency lighting, and gymnasium lighting with multilevel metal halide fixtures with quartz bayonets.

Other design features included firm and interruptive natural gas systems, commercial kitchen equipment, fume hoods and exhaust ventilation. Life safety elements included a hydraulically balanced fire protection system with standpipes, sprinklers, and voice activation as well as a closed circuit security system with motion sensors and intercom.

DTC’s high-energy efficiency in their mechanical, electrical and plumbing platform was awarded a grant for the Town approaching $170,000 dollars by United Illuminating. An Energy Blueprint Incentive of just over $143,000 will be applied to the cost of the new school and a $25,000 Comprehensive Bonus Incentive was also granted. The program is projected to consume nearly 2.25 million kWh less than a comparable "base case" building. Hence the Town wins twice, with the grant and in potential annual energy savings of $247,000.
